once again, i am in between trips. matt and i got back from des moines late on monday night and i am planning on heading to ohio for the fourth of july (although in all honestly. . . i just typed Christmas. what the heck?!) sometime tomorrow. and once again, i have the age-old adages associated with my travels.

wasn't someone supposed to take pictures on this trip?

what is it that we spent three full days doing again?

how in the heck has another month passed us by already?

does anyone else want to plan the wedding/move/my life?

okay, maybe that last one isn't an age-old adage, but it's not going to surprise anyone who knows me. these big life events are just not my strong suits. i will be thankful to have the major decisions taken care of: the date, time, place. . .

my dad knew before i did that i wasn't good at change, which - fortunately or unfortunately -often accompanies these big decision times. i think he actually was the one who told me that only a few years ago. it kind of blew my mind that he would say that. then it blew my mind that he was so, so right. but time has shown that my mom and dad often know these big things before i do. i can't tell you the number of things that i've told them that i thought would be big deals - that might even take then by surprise - that were met with the simple response of something like, "yeah, we kind of figured. . . " (you know, the nice person's version of "DUH"). so, as i chuckle to myself about how the wedding planning has once again shown how right they were, i can't help but notice that i'm okay with plugging away at the details. i've gotten a bit of a jump on putting together our wedding webpage, but haven't put it up as a live site yet because we don't really have the big details figured out. where that fits into all of these things, i'm not certain. maybe i'm detail oriented. although i'd always hoped to be a "big picture" kind of gal. maybe i just stick with things that are manageable in small chunks. there's no real way to divide things like choosing a wedding date into smaller steps.

on the same note, it was interesting to see how many of the people we talked to this weekend directed their wedding questions at me. matt was a good sport about it all. he knows me far to well to think that i was going to be able to handle any of that and by the end of the first visit was stepping in far before i was giving our tour guide the "oh my God, why are you saying  things like that to me right now?" look. actually i remember matt telling me a story about one of his coworkers telling him that the best advice that they could give him was to never have an opinion about anything. (i think the aforementioned look actually appeared during his retelling of this story). his (very accurate) response was that that might be directly counterproductive in our specific case.

i sure my parents appreciate this kind of recognition - both because it keeps me happier and because it saves them lots of tear-filled, stressed-out phone calls. it's a win-win really.

we have two frontrunners in the venue selection race as of now. the jasper winery and the des moines historical building. we loved them both, actually. they are just so different that we are having a hard time trying to compare them directly. we'll get there, though. actually, even just going to look feels like progress.

i don't even have much to report on matt's stay in PA before our trip, since i was sick for most of the time. we did have a beautiful dinner courtesy of josh and becca. we got one of the best seats by the windows of Allen Street Grill. after that was when i had my full-blown cold. i don't even really remember finishing up teaching my class (though i am happy to report that upon grading 3 more papers, i am officially done). i just remember that my last lecture was immediately followed by coming home and trying to sleep off a fever.

the only other awesome thing that happened was that i convinced matt to try out a hurricane simulator in the mall. essentially, that just resulted in him being confined in a container where he was hit with 78.7+ mile per hour winds. in retrospect, maybe it wasn't the best move, but it sure was funny at the time. (ohhh. . . so maybe it was karma that struck me ill. . . .i get it. that was totally my bad.)
