a new topic, potentially

i *think* that i've just figured out how to copy and paste my opinions on the latest books that i've read into my blog. my "reviews" tend to be pretty broad, but at least give you a general sense of what i've been reading and may be helpful if you're just looking for something to get your hands on (especially if you live close enough to just borrow my copy).

point of interest: i buy most of my books from www.half.com. i like having copies of books that i've read (particularly the ones that i enjoy) and for most of the stuff that i purchase, i'm virtually paying only for shipping. there are inexpensive used copies of textbooks on here, too, FYI.

Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent FaithUnder the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith by Jon Krakauer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

i am a big fan of the way that jon krakauer writes, so this read was pretty great for me. it's a story about two brothers from a sect of morman fundamentalism that were involved in the murder of a mother and her child in the 1990s. the book flip-flops back and forth between the history of the FLDS faith (and its many branches), the nature of fundamentalism in general, and the story of the killers' crime and trials. not necessarily a must read, but a good one if you're looking for well-researched, easy-to-follow, and interesting nonfiction.
